We’re using a form to collect donations linked to a donors table. Our workflow is:
Search for the donor’s name via the donors portal.
If the donor is not found, create a new record with the New Donor button in the Search window.
After saving, the new donor record window is dismissed and the user is returned to the screen with the Search window still displaying. It can be dismissed by clicking off the window, but I believe the expected behavior is for the Search window to close when the user clicks the New Donor button.

The message in the animation says the window should close after the New Donor button is clicked, but it probably makes more sense to close it after the new record is saved.
